Sports aren’t happening in our lives now, but there is growing optimism that college football will be played in some form or fashion this upcoming season.

So you’re telling me there’s a chance…

It’s been a weird month without sports, but what are you going to do? The NBA and the NHL shut their leagues down right in the middle of the playoff push. The MLS got maybe two weeks worth of games in before ceasing operations. The poor MLB hasn’t even had opening day yet. At this juncture, the only sport whose seasons haven’t been massively affected by all this is football.

Of course, the college students are all home these days and taking online classes. While the NFL held its free-agency period and will have the 2020 NFL Draft two weeks from today, we’re beginning to wonder if college athletics are even going to be possible this fall, especially the country’s second most popular sport of college football.

Fortunately for us, there does seem to be some optimism that college football will be back in some way, shape or form this fall. ESPN’s Adam Schefter gave us all some good news on Thursday afternoon of how we might have a college football season.

Schefter tweeted out Thursday afternoon, “speaking to people in and around college football this week, there is ‘strong conviction’ there will be college football this season. Uncertainty about when – multiple scenarios being debated – but they sound certain there still will be college football this season.”

Like many of us, Schefter is an avid college football fan, proudly supporting his alma mater’s Michigan Wolverines. For a guy who is at the top of his field as an NFL insider, of course, he has time to watch the Wolverines play on Saturday. When your alma mater has a good football team, there’s nothing like it. Let’s just hope we all get some pigskin on the college circuit this fall.

As for the “multiple scenarios being debated” part of his tweet, that can be interpreted in so many ways. Will the season be delayed a month or so? Will these games be played without the presence of fans? How will the NCAA handle putting its student-athletes into situations that could potentially jeopardize their health? All of these questions can and will be addressed in due time.

September is five months away, but it’s not like these college athletes are in football shape. For anybody to play football and limit the amount of injuries, the players and coaching staffs will need at least a month of lead-up time to make this possible. A vaccine won’t be ready by then, but perhaps the virus will be under control by this summer?

Either way, the 2020 college football season isn’t official dead yet. It’s a small victory, but it is still a reason to celebrate nevertheless. You have to appreciate the little things in these trying times. Forever and always.
