The Lions hold the third overall pick in the NFL Draft, but with many holes on the roster and several teams looking to move up, Detroit should trade down.

The Detroit Lions may have the most coveted draft selection in the first round of this year’s annual NFL selection meeting. For starters, they’re likely to have their choice of the two best defensive players in the draft: Ohio State defenders cornerback Jeff Okudah or edge rusher Chase Young.

But, that assumes the team makes the pick at three. The real dream scenario for the Lions ought to be to move down and gather as many top 100 selections as possible to help fill their talent-depleted roster. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport indicated that the Lions are already having talks with multiple teams about a potential draft day trade.

Detroit is a team with many needs: cornerback, edge rusher, defensive tackle, interior offensive lineman are the most prevalent examples. However, the team could also begin looking for a quarterback of the future to groom behind Matt Stafford, could look for upgrades at wide receiver or running back, and could work to build depth at the linebacker and safety positions.

With all of these needs, and only three picks in the top 100 (seven overall), the best strategy for Detroit to take in to the draft is to trade down with a team that is either really itching for one of the top defenders, who has fallen in love with the top offensive tackle on the board, or who is desperate for a quarterback.

So, what trades make sense based on what happens with the first two picks.
