The 2020 NFL Draft is only a couple weeks away. Which five positions should the Dallas Cowboys prioritize later this April?

Mike McCarthy will have his first NFL Draft with his new team later this month. The Dallas Cowboys will have seven picks to work with.

If there is one thing that Jerry Jones and his team have done well over the past few years, it is draft. Each year, management has selected players who have later become starters or solid depth pieces.

Here are a few of the drafted players who have become starters:

Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, Zack Martin, Tyron Smith, Michael Gallup, Chidobe Awuzie, Xavier Woods, Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch.

Building through the draft and hitting on picks in every round is how you build a team into a contender. However, you have to win in that window for it to matter. This is something the Cowboys have struggled with.

Every draft is important, but this year’s is crucial for the Cowboys. They are built to win now but have lost starters this past offseason. Even with the key draft selections have left, but that window to contend is still cracked open.

What five positions should they target in this draft to compete in 2020?

5. Safety

It feels like the Cowboys have been in the market for safety depth, or an upgrade at either safety spot, for the past few years. For the last couple of seasons, it had been Jeff Heath and Xavier Woods occupying those positions.

Heath has since left and signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. He played his first seven seasons in the NFL with the team.

Woods has also been around, spending his first three seasons with the Cowboys.

Currently, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Woods are the two starters at each safety position for new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan.

Clinton-Dix signed a one-year, $3.75 million deal this offseason.

Jones and McCarthy need to add rotational players to the safety positions, and also look for a possible player to replace Clinton-Dix for 2021.
