Venom 2 just got a new release date and an official title, and this nearly confirms rumors about Venom 2’s link to Morbius.

The 2020 movie slate is clearing out more and more by the day, and not even the late entries in film are getting a chance to roll out in theaters. This time, Venom 2 is officially moved. Originally scheduled to come out Oct. 2, 2020, the movie will now open June 25, 2021.

Previously, we speculated whether this would happen when Sony rearranged some of its upcoming movies earlier this month. Most importantly, Morbius (which was supposed to come out this July) was moved to March 19, 2021. But Venom 2 was left alone to still open in October, something that was borderline concerning given recent rumors about Morbius’ connection to the Venom sequel.

But before we move on, let it be known that the sequel is officially called Venom: Let There Be Carnage, referring to the headlining antagonist played by Woody Harrelson. His character, in fact, plays a huge role in this rumor and it’s really all about him.

As the rumors go, there’s a scene in Morbius where the titular character, played by Jared Leto, is sent to prison. This prison, it turns out, is the same prison that Cletus Kasady is locked away in. After an incident is sparked by Leto, the prisoners are able to escape. And that, of course, includes Kasady.

It makes sense, then, that Morbius would come out before Let There Be Carnage so that the movie could set up the Venom sequel. Otherwise, showing the movies out of order would make no sense. The delay in announcing the sequel’s new release date was probably due to a list of factors from Sony — but it was ultimately probably always planned that Let There Be Carnage would have to follow Morbius no matter what.

Meanwhile in Sony’s Spider-Verse, the third Spider-Man spinoff is still set to come out July 16, 2021, meaning these movies would basically be released back to back all in 2021. With Spider-Man’s movie in particular, there’s probably a lot of moving pieces involved if that date were to be changed, including consulting Marvel Studios about its release calendar — seeing as Peter Parker crosses over with Sony’s universe and the MCU.

All in all, the effects of the coronavirus pandemic have caused lots of pushes in the movie industry, creating a domino effect for all movies needing to be released or still in the production phases. For Sony’s Spider-Man universe, we’ll see how they pull it off once theaters are open and seats can be filled again.
