The Jacksonville Jaguars may be trying to make a splash in the draft’s first round tonight, why might they look to get to the No. 3 overall pick?

More intrigue leading into the 2020 NFL Draft kicking off.

ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported this afternoon the Jacksonville Jaguars had contacted the Detroit Lions about trading up to the third-overall selection in tonight’s first round.

The source of much interesting leading up to the draft, the Jaguars added another wrinkle just hours before the first round by making the previously unreported trade inquiry.

The Jags have been a very popular topic in recent weeks. For starters, they have two veteran impact players on the trade block, in running back Leonard Fournette and defensive end Yannick Ngakoue. In addition to potentially adding draft capital from those trades, the Jaguars already own 12 picks in this year’s draft including two in the first round.

Obviously, then, the Jaguars have plenty of ammunition to use to try to move up.

But why would they?

There are myriad reasons Jacksonville might look to get to the No. 3 pick. It could be angling for a quarterback, like Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa or Oregon signal-caller Justin Herbert.

Or, the Jaguars could be set on last year’s starter, Gardner Minshew, and be looking towards the top offensive tackle on their board, like Jedrick Wills from Alabama or Tristan Wirfs from Iowa. This would boost the offensive outlook for the team, and give Minshew a fighting chance to be successful.

They could also be in love with a new defensive captain, like Isaiah Simmons of Clemson to replace the in-limbo Telvin Smith from the heart of their unit.

Finally, this could be pre-draft smoke-screening by Detroit, attempting to compel a bigger trade package out of Miami or Los Angeles, who may be looking to trade up for a quarterback.
