The Indianapolis Colts traded up in the second round of the NFL Draft to take Jonathan Taylor. It’s going to pay dividends for fantasy football managers.

Jonathan Taylor was the best running back in college football last season. He came into the season as a Heisman Trophy candidate and won the Doak Walker Award once the Wisconsin Badgers season ended. On Friday, the Indianapolis Colts traded up in the second round to get their running back.

One of the big worries with Taylor was the pure workload he faced in college. In three years as a Badger, he had 926 carries. Coming into the league, some might worry about making him a three-down back. Well, the Colts don’t have to worry about that. They make him the second of a two-headed monster with Marlon Mack, who took a step in the right direction last year. He had his first 1,000-yard season, and he showed he can be a game-breaker.

Taylor is going to put the “pound” into the ground and pound in the NFL. He’s that old school type that can still run through you. This may worry you, just like the college workload, but Taylor is built to last. He may only be 5-foot-11, but he is 219 pounds of pure power.

On top of the fact that Taylor is just built like a mack truck, there’s the fact that the Colts can ease him into the NFL thanks to the presence of Mack. Taylor only needs to run the ball about 12 times per game to make an impact. Even with that, he could still have some monster games. He can break two and three and four tackles on a play, which turns into monster plays and touchdowns.

Speaking of touchdowns, Taylor is a player that will be very important for fantasy players. Once he eases into the NFL game, he could sneak into the starting role for the Colts, and he could be one of the best in the game.

Last season, he had 26 touchdowns in 14 games. That’s going to be a crucial stat for fantasy players, as the Colts who now have Philip Rivers under center will look for someone who can pound it in the end zone once the offense moves down the field. Maybe because of the lack of carries, you won’t see a big yard producer in Taylor, but he’s going to score touchdowns, and that’s what we really care about.
