D’Andre Swift was the third player taken in the second round, but all eyes were on his dad.

The Detroit Lions got bold — and a little shocking — by using their second draft selection on Georgia running back D’Andre Swift. But any shock over the Lions taking a running back when they have a number of other needs on the roster was washed away with a different shock.

Darren Swift, D’Andre’s father, is absolutely ripped.

College football fans likely already were aware of Swift’s incredible bulk, but for the masses this was the introduction to our new favorite Sports Dad. While it was his son’s moment, the more senior Swift stole the spotlight.

Of course, everyone on Twitter loved every second of it.

If anything, the internet joking about Swift’s dad took away from anyone actually talking about the pick itself, which is a bit perplexing. Running back was a need for the Lions but not one high enough to seemingly justify addressing the position with their second pick in this draft.

Swift is the consensus best running back left, and some even believed him to be higher on their board than Clyde Edwards-Helaire who the Kansas City Chiefs used the last pick of the first-round on. Don’t get it twisted, the Lions are getting a really good player, but it’s not a player they need over the other good players at other positions of need.

Detroit already had Kerryon Johnson on the roster, who they used a second round pick on not that long ago, but taking Swift doesn’t mean Johnson is getting replaced. Rather, it seems that offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell is going to try and give Matthew Stafford. a two-headed running attack.

There will be plenty of time to dissect this pick, especially if we have to wait longer than usual for football to come back into our lives. For now, let’s appreciate that in drafting Swift the running back the Lions also have Father Swift to enjoy for the next handful of years as well.
