The Houston Texans made only five picks throughout the weekend after so many trades. How did Bill O’Brien do in this draft?

First Round

This has not been a comfortable offseason for Bill O’Brien, and even during draft weekend, the Houston Texans head coach was caught getting upset—apparently at a trade that didn’t go down as planned. That’s pretty much symbolic of this offseason for O’Brien and the Texans who have taken their licks for the decisions made (a la the trade of DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals).

The Texans still have a talented roster as illustrated by their nice postseason run, but they could have used a greater infusion of youth than what they were able to pull in over the 2020 NFL Draft weekend.

Unfortunately, O’Brien had traded away some assets that kept them from bringing in as many prospects as others. They ended up with only five rookies drafted and that includes a missed opportunity in the first round due to the trade for Laremy Tunsil.

The Texans did at least commit to Tunsil to keep him around for the next few years, albeit to a record-setting tune of $22 million annually. No one is quite sure what O’Brien is doing, but maybe that’s the fun of being a Texans fan.
