New York Jets 2020 NFL Draft grades: Mekhi Becton added
Third Round
New York swapped to a defensive focus in the third round, starting with Cal safety Ashtyn Davis. Even with Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye, the position was a huge need as Matthias Farley is the only other safety on the roster. Davis will be a great depth piece, and could blossom into a starter over time.
Davis is versatile, having played cornerback as well in college, and he will be a great piece for new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. He’s a grinder. He proved that going from walk-on to starter at Cal, turning down a track scholarship to bet on himself as a football player.
Davis should also find himself on many special teams units, as a returner and great coverage player.
Sticking with defense, the Jets chose Jabari Zuninga just 11 picks after Davis. The former Florida Gators star believes he is the steal of the draft, and he is eager to prove it.
“I definitely consider myself the steal of the draft,” Zuniga, the No. 79 overall pick, said. “I feel like I can do a lot on the football field. And I’ll show that next year.”
Zuniga fell in the draft after missing seven games with an ankle injury last season. He could become a super star if he is fully recovered, or he could be a bust. The boom or bust nature of his game makes him a questionable pick here with so much talent still on the board, including at the EDGE position.
