2021 NFL Draft: 5 teams that are perfect fits for Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence
By John Buhler
How can someone hate something so beautiful, magnificent and majestic? Well, if Lawrence ends up on the New England Patriots, people will turn on the guy faster than Rob Gronkowski came out of retirement to join Tom Brady with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. No, it wouldn’t be fair for the Evil Empire to get the greatest quarterbacking talent in 40 years, but let’s not rule it out just yet.
After 20 years of dominating the NFL, the Patriots are about to enter what looks like a brief rebuilding phase. They’re opting to go with former Auburn Tigers quarterback Jarrett Stidham as their Week 1 starter in 2020. While he was good at times playing for Gus Malzahn down on The Plains, there’s a really good chance this move doesn’t work out of the Patriots at all.
Should New England stumble to something like 6-10 this fall, the Patriots will be picking in the top 10 of the 2020 NFL Draft. They will have plenty of ammunition to give up everything any team could ever want for the No. 1 overall pick. Does Landing Lawrence mean Bill Belichick will win the war in the ongoing battle of who was more part of the dynasty’s success between him and Brady?
The Patriots immediately become nationally relevant again, with them getting the five maximum primetime games right out of the gate. Lawrence has the arm to thrive playing in a cold AFC East climate. He’d be leaving one of the greatest college football programs of the last decade and arriving in the greatest NFL program we’ve seen this century. It wouldn’t be fair, but we’d watch.
