NFL quarterback power rankings: AFC West edition
4. Los Angeles Chargers
Tyrod Taylor 2019 – 33 yards, 1 Total TD, 0 Int
Justin Herbert 2019 (Oregon) – 3,471 yards, 36 Total TD, 6 Int
After 16 years and 228 games, Philip Rivers and the Chargers parted ways this offseason. Rivers landed on his feet in Indianapolis with the Colts.
The Chargers did not make a run for a quarterback in free agency, and don’t seem to be in on the likes of Cam Newton or Andy Dalton now. Instead, the team looks ready to enter the season with either Tyrod Taylor or Justin Herbert.
Taylor has not been a starter since 2018. He beat, at the time, rookie Baker Mayfield for the No. 1 job before giving that role to Mayfield a few weeks into the 2018 season.
From 2015-2017, Taylor was the starter for the Buffalo Bills. He went 22-20, making the Pro Bowl once. He also has a Super Bowl on his resume as a backup with the Baltimore Ravens. One of the two players on this list to have been on a Super Bowl-winning team.
Like Taylor did with the Browns, he will probably be the starter for the Chargers until Herbert proves he’s ready. Herbert was taken sixth-overall in the draft after four strong seasons at Oregon.
Taylor is more of a game manager, and Herbert has not played a down in the NFL yet. Therefore, they come in at four.
