NFL quarterback power rankings: AFC East edition
3. Jarrett Stidham (New England Patriots)
2019 Stats: 50% completions, 50 yards, 0 touchdowns, 1 interception
The Patriots’ quarterback situation is a bit unsettled now that Tom Brady is gone, but at the moment it appears the job will go to second-year man Jarrett Stidham. Bill Belichick opted not to draft a quarterback this year and has thus far resisted the urge to sign a more proven veteran like Cam Newton, Jameis Winston or Andy Dalton.
The Patriots took Stidham in the fourth round of the 2019 draft and clearly like what they saw in practice last year. Stidham had very limited experience during the regular season, attempting only four passes and throwing one interception, but that is to be expected with Brady playing nearly all the snaps.
Brian Hoyer is currently New England’s backup, but it appears as if it will be Stidham’s show. The Patriots have made life tough for Stidham, notably failing to upgrade their skill position depth outside of signing Marqise Lee.
Stidham is ahead of Tagovailoa because he has at least played in the NFL, but there is a good chance he will get lapped by the end of the 2020 season. The Patriots do have a major issue at the quarterback position right now and it seems like their best path to success this year is to rely on their strong defense while Stidham manages the offense.
