Tua Tagovailoa picks Dolphins jersey number with Dan Marino’s No. 13 retired
Tua Tagovailoa will wear No. 1 with the Miami Dolphins and you can expect it’ll be among the best-selling jerseys in the NFL this year.
The Miami Dolphins haven’t had a Pro Bowl quarterback Dan Marino and for those who didn’t know, Dan Marino has been retired since 1999. It’s been a long, treacherous journey at the quarterback position for Dolphins fans, but they’re hoping 2020 first round pick Tua Tagovailoa will change that and become the next savior of the Dolphins.
With the hype in Miami, fans naturally will be eager to buy Tua’s jersey, but with that comes the big question: What number did the Alabama quarterback pick?
Well, he revealed that information on Wednesday via Twitter in a mock-up of how the No. 5 overall pick looks in his new digs.
It’ll be No. 1 for Tua in South Beach, which is an interesting selection. Not many quarterbacks wear No. 1 these days with last year’s No. 1 pick, Kyler Murray, wearing the number with the Arizona Cardinals and Cam Newton wore the number with the Carolina Panthers.
Typically, the number is common with wide receivers like at Michigan, or a team’s best player, on the college level.
Tua wore No. 13 while at Alabama but with Marino’s number being retired by the Dolphins he had to find a new number. He wasn’t about to ask Marino for permission to wear his number, but he is ready for the challenge of being the best signal-caller the franchise has seen this century. Tua knows what the fan base has been through at the position and how he’s tasked with turning things around.
We’ve seen quarterbacks wear different numbers from their collegiate numbers all the time (Patrick Mahomes, Drew Brees, Tom Brady to name a few) and at the end of the day, it’s just a number. For Dolphins fans, their No. 1 player is literally No. 1 and should go a long way in making Tua’s jersey one of the best-selling jerseys among NFL rookies and perhaps in the same company as that aforementioned quarterback trio.
