5 Taulia Tagovailoa transfer predictions: Family reunion in Miami on tap?
By John Buhler
Eugene, Oregon has been a good spot for native Hawaiian quarterbacks. Jeremiah Masoli had his best college seasons there, while Marcus Mariota became the greatest player in program history, as he led the Oregon Ducks to the College Football Playoff in 2014 and won the Heisman Trophy. Plus, Oregon has had so many great quarterbacks over the years, it’s ridiculous.
Not only are the Ducks the preeminent West Coast team with the USC Trojans still down, but they are coached by a former Nick Saban disciple in Mario Cristobal. Since arriving in Eugene, Cristobal has the Ducks trending up and rapidly approaching what the used to be under Chip Kelly. Assuming he has longer staying power, Cristobal will be the next Mike Bellotti at Oregon.
Though the Ducks are recruiting at a level that was previously unheard of, perhaps Cristobal will take a flier on the younger Tagovailoa brother and see how that goes. He may not ever become Mariota or his older brother, but if Tagovailoa becomes a Kellen Clemens-level player, then it will certainly be worth the investment in the transfer quarterback.
Admittedly, Oregon is the best program Tagovailoa could realistically go to. The Ducks should win the Pac-12 and make the College Football Playoff at least once during his time in Eugene. However, we can’t expect the entire Tagovailoa clan to up and leave the southeast for the Pacific Northwest now that Tua plays in Miami. Hawaii would be a different story, but Oregon isn’t Hawaii.
