5 realistic trades the Kansas City Chiefs can make to break football
3. Reddick Becomes A Chief
The Chiefs drafted a rangy linebacker in Willie Gay during the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. While he’s hopefully the future in Kansas City, loading up at the position with Haason Reddick isn’t a bad idea.
Reddick was the 13th-overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, taken one spot behind Deshaun Watson. Coming out of Temple, the former Owls standout was thought to be a sideline-to-sideline type who could cover tight ends and backs. However, his career hasn’t taken off in the desert, leaving the Cardinals to decline his fifth-year option.
General manager Brett Veach has long been aggressive in the trade market. His specialty has been dealing for former first-round picks who fall out of favor in their current building. Last year, Veach traded a late-round pick for Jets linebacker Darron Lee. In years past, he’s made moves for offensive lineman Cam Erving and linebacker Reggie Ragland (Ragland was a second-rounder).
While Reddick would come in and compete for time on the defending champs, he provides quality depth at worst and a kid with legitimate upside at best. Only 25 years old, it’s possible he could be turned around by defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
If the Chiefs could make Reddick into the player he was thought to be coming into the draft, he’d provide another great athlete on a defense already starring Tyrann Mathieu, Juan Thornhill, Frank Clark and Chris Jones.
