Skins Match Format, Details

A skins golf match means that each hole will have a value attached to it. The winning team on every hole wins that skin. If the teams tie, the skin carries over to the next hole and the winning team on that hole would win both skins and the total dollar amount in play.

For the TaylorMade Driving Relief, each team will start with $500,000, which is not common, but since this is to benefit charity, they tweaked this golf match a bit. Meanwhile, the hole values will increase throughout the 18-hole round. The values will be as follows:

  • Holes No. 1-6: $50,000
  • Holes No. 7-16: $100,000
  • Hole No. 17: $200,000
  • Hole No. 18: $500,000

The team with the highest total at the end of the match obviously wins. However, if the 18th hole is tied and ends prior to 5:45 p.m. ET, the players will play the roughly 125-yard 17th hole, a par-3, again. If they tie that one, the skin will be determined from No. 17 again, this time with a closest-to-the-pin competition. If the 18th hole is tied and concludes after 5:45 p.m. ET, the closest-to-the-pin competition will be the immediate determining factor.

TaylorMade Driving Relief will also be a four-ball match. This means that every player on the course will play a ball, but the lowest score from each team will be counted towards who wins the skin.

As mentioned, Farmer’s Insurance has also sponsored low scoring to donate to charity as well. Birdies will be worth $25,000, eagles will be worth $50,000 and an albatross or hole-in-one will be worth $150,000. Because low scores are valuable, there will be no gimmes and all players will be asked to putt out.

Predictions

Considering that Rory McIlroy is the No. 1 player in the world and that Dustin Johnson has won 20 times in his career compared to Rickie Fowler, who has a sprinkling of wins, and Matthew Wolff with just one win and in his first full year on the PGA Tour, it’s no shock that the Rory-DJ pairing is the favorite for this golf match.

However, not only is it wise to take the underdog team of Fowler and Wolff because of the possible payout but also because of what we’ve seen. This is a huge proving ground for Wolff to show he belongs among the big boys in golf. Meanwhile, Fowler has been playing a ton of golf during the COVID-19 outbreak and has posted some impressive score cards on social media.

Maybe that’s just getting bamboozled but, with a course that Fowler is familiar with, he and Wolff are the pick to win TaylorMade Driving Relief.
