Georgetown basketball coach Patrick Ewing tested positive for COVID-19.

NBA Hall of Famer and Georgetown basketball coach Patrick Ewing announced he tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Friday evening.

Ewing shared the news on his Twitter account and Georgetown sent a press release with the news.

“I want to share that I have tested positive for COVID-19,” Ewing shared. “This virus is serious and should not be taken lightly. I want to encourage everyone to stay safe and take care of yourselves and your loved ones.”

Ewing says he will be okay as he is isolated at a local hospital. He is the only member of the Georgetown basketball program to have tested positive for the coronavirus.

He is coming off his third season as the head coach at his alma mater and has a 49-46 record with the Hoyas.

The global pandemic resulted in the cancelation of March Madness and an abrupt end to the season for Ewing and for everyone in college basketball. The NBA quickly postponed games after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19 and his teammate, Donovan Mitchell, later tested positive as well. Kevin Durant was another NBA superstar to be diagnosed with coronavirus as well.

NFL players Von Miller and Brian Allen made public their diagnosis.

The coronavirus has affected everyone in some fashion. Whether it’s being diagnosed themselves and enduring the effects or seeing a family member, friend or co-worker affected by the virus. Even if you don’t know someone who was diagnosed, you were affected in other ways with states closing, businesses laying off employees and many experiencing hardships.

The NCAA allowed the voluntary return to athletic activities for student-athletes beginning on June 1 with the SEC voting to allow for a June 8 return. Other schools have made their individual decisions on when to return.
