Fantasy Football: Players to avoid in 2020
Our last position, could also be the most important position on your team: Wide Receivers. You don’t want to go wrong when drafting these guys. Here are 4 players to avoid when you are drafting your receivers.
When I suggest avoiding these players, it is important to recognize that this doesn’t mean they won’t be good, it means they are being overvalued. Obviously, if you see someone that should be taken in the 1st round, slip to the 3rd, you should jump all over that.
Let’s kick it off with: Amari Cooper.
Amari Cooper (currently ranked as: WR9): This is a reach. Cooper will be the last ‘top-tier’ WR left on the board and a desperate team will take him because of that. I caution to stay away. For starters, he is no longer in a contract year. He was just signed to a huge extension so what’s the extra motivation to try his hardest. Even then, the Cowboys just drafted Ceedee Lamb in the first round, someone who is certain to take targets away from Amari. In my eyes, Cooper’s 2020 season has too much risk. Too many outcomes that could derail your quest for a championship. If he was guaranteed to see 10-12 targets a game, I would be all over him. Sadly, that is not the case. They are a run-first team with Zeke. AND, there are just too many mouths to field in Dallas for him to be a consistent WR1 every Sunday.
Tyreek Hill (currently ranked as: WR2): Tyreek is a freakish athlete. Fastest man in the league. But similar to Amari Cooper, there just aren’t enough targets to go around. Tyreek Hill is anything but consistent. When I draft my team, I want my WR1 to go out and consistently get me 15-20 points. Good news for Tyreek is that he will average 15-20 points season long. Bad news is that he will do so but scoring 30 points one week, and then 2 points the next. It’s just pure frustration. You’ll be watching RedZone and see Pat Mahomes throw a ball 70 yards for a touchdown….to Tyreek Hill? You get super excited! Nope, nice one. Try Mecole Hardman, Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson, or even Byron Pringle. One of those players was streaking down the field while Tyreek was being a distraction. There’s just way too many options on the Chiefs. If I am drafting someone this high as a WR, I look for someone like Julio Jones (WR4) or Davante Adams (WR3) who I know I can count on each week to show up. Additionally, both of those two players will catch more passes and have a much higher floor than someone with boom-or-bust potential like Tyreek is.
