Fantasy football: Five quarterbacks who were helped most this offseason
By Brian Towne
Five quarterbacks who were helped most during the 2020 offseason by the skill position additions to their teams roster and how it affects their fantasy outlook.
How a fantasy quarterback performs from one season to the next, hinges largely on the talent around them. Theoretically, the more weapons a quarterback has, the more yards, touchdowns and fantasy points he will accrue. So if a quarterback has an influx of talent around him, his performance should improve dramatically. Some times it does (Lamar Jackson), sometimes it doesn’t (Baker Mayfield).
Here we focus on net gains for quarterbacks and their offenses. The DeAndre Hopkins–David Johnson trade, as lopsided as it may seem, is still a one for one trade. As elite as Hopkins is, he was the only skill player of note to be added to the Arizona Cardinals, so Kyler Murray doesn’t qualify for this list. Another example, Atlanta Falcons added RB Todd Gurley and TE Hayden Hurst to even out the losses of RB Devonta Freeman and TE Austin Hooper, so Matt Ryan doesn’t apply either.
It’s no coincidence that the teams that added the most skill position players in 2020 are the Broncos and Raiders, two teams in the same division as the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs,. who have developed a very potent offense over the last two seasons. If you can’t beat them, you might as well try to join them by amassing as much offensive firepower as possible.
This is not to say that Drew Lock and Derek Carr will become as dominant as KC’s Patrick Mahomes or Baltimore Ravens Lamar Jackson. But quarterbacks are more desirable in fantasy football if they are given a better surrounding cast.
Here’s a look at Quarterbacks with their new talent and how it will impact their fantasy outlook.
