4. 1975 Oklahoma football season

Final Record: 11-1 | Finish: National Champions (def. Michigan in Orange Bowl, 14-6)

Entering the 1975 season, Barry Switzer and Oklahoma football were the reigning national champions (perhaps more on that later). It was only the third season under the legendary head coach but they were the clear favorites to win another title as they had a 20-game winning streak coming into the year and a ton of experience on both sides of the ball to lead the way.

That winning streak actually didn’t continue through the entire 1975 season. The Sooners were actually upset after an 8-0 start to the year, falling in a stunner to an unranked Kansas Jayhawks team. Having said that, the star-laden defense led by Lee Roy Selmon and an offense helmed by experienced quarterback Steve Davis along with Joe Washington righted the ship quickly.

After the loss to Kansas, the Sooners were able to avoid another upset as they scored a long touchdown to skate past No. 18-ranked Missouri. They then earned a statement win over No. 2-ranked Nebraska in a 35-10 rout of the Cornhuskers, forcing them into six turnovers on the day. That set up a date with Michigan in the Orange Bowl.

The defense again came up big as Oklahoma held the Wolverines to only six points on the day. With that, the two touchdowns that the Sooners were able to manage were enough to get the win. Coupled with Ohio State losing in the Rose Bowl, that gave Switzer another title. Without the slip-up against Kansas, the 1975 team could’ve been much higher on this list given how good they were.
