Dodgers disappointment No. 6: 1952 season
Record: 96-57
Playoff Result: Lost WS 4-3
While the Dodgers missed the National League pennants in 1950 and 1951, they captured the 1952 flag.
They were able to rebound after the heartbreaking ending of the previous season’s Fall Classic. Game 1 of the World Series opened up at Ebbetts Field with Brooklyn taking a 4-2 victory at home.
The Yankees and Dodgers would rotate victories in the next three games. Brooklyn managed to squeak out a win in Game Five thanks to Duke Snider’s two-run homer. In the top of the 11th, Snider knocked in his fourth run of the game for a 6-5 victory, putting the Dodgers a win away from winning it all.
Snider, who was enjoying an incredible series, hit a pair of solo home runs in Game 6, however, his teammates didn’t back him up. The Yankees would collect a 3-2 victory courtesy of Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle, both hitting home runs.
The Dodgers were close to tying Game 7 until Jackie Robinson lifted a short pop to the right side of the infield. Yankee’s second baseman Billy Martin made a heroic catch to preserve New York’s lead and their fourth consecutive title. In this tightly contested matchup, the Yankees batted .216 while the Dodgers only hit .215.
