The clock is ticking on Dak Prescott’s new contract.

In the next few weeks, the Dallas Cowboys must figure out what they’re doing with Dak Prescott.

Prescott gave the Cowboys four great years on his rookie deal as a former fourth-round pick out of Mississippi State University. He led “America’s Team” to the postseason twice and won a playoff game, bringing newfound stability to the quarterback position in the wake of Tony Romo’s injury and then retirement. Prescott will get paid, but will it be by the Cowboys? Should we be worried?

July 15 is the deadline for a long-term extension to be in place with a player who was slapped with the franchise tag like Prescott. If the Cowboys and Prescott’s camp don’t agree on a long-term deal, he will have to play on the franchise tag in 2020 before hitting unrestricted free agency again next year. It still several weeks out, but when should the worrying start for Dallas?

Is it time to worry about Dak Prescott’s contract situation?

Starting June 1, the Cowboys will have 45 days to put a deal in place with Prescott beyond the 2020 NFL campaign. If putting together a deal to keep Prescott long-term isn’t the top priority for the Cowboys, then they need to reassess what their priorities are. There has to be a crushing sense of urgency to get something in place. Otherwise, it will have been a waste of an offseason.

Should the Cowboys and Prescott’s representation agree to terms on a new deal as early as tomorrow, that would be terrific for both parties. That means they were able to get a deal done well before the July 15 deadline. If it comes at any point in June, that would be wonderful as well, as the negotiating process will have reached its conclusion with weeks to spare.

But should we get into the July part of the calendar, every day a deal isn’t done becomes even more pressing. June 30 and July 1 are only one day apart on the calendar, but their perception feels totally different. If July 1 turns into July 7, you should start sweating if you’re a fan of the Cowboys. If July 7 becomes July 14, it’s time to start sweating profusely because the heat is on.

Prescott could be looking at a mega-contract that pays him up to $200 million. He should command Russell Wilson Seattle Seahawks money at the very least, possibly stand as the highest paid quarterback in football. Simply put, it’s Prescott’s turn for the benchmark honor. However, will it be four years like Prescott wants or will it be upwards of five like the Cowboys are interested in?

Once the calendar flips to July, Cowboys fans should start worrying about Prescott’s negotiations.
