Surprise, surprise: Patrick Mahomes is the NFL MVP favorite once again.

The world is Patrick Mahomes‘ oyster and the reigning Super Bowl MVP is set to take over the NFL. While the Kansas City Chiefs haven’t extended Mahomes’ contract yet, he could bolster his payday with another league MVP trophy.

Oddsmakers have installed Mahomes as the favorite to take home the 2020 NFL MVP award, an honor he last won in 2018. Lamar Jackson, who took home the MVP last season, is the second choice and is followed by Russell Wilson, Dak Prescott and Tom Brady.

There’s no question that Mahomes is the most exciting player in football. Anyone who has kept track of his career since he took over the starting gig for Kansas City in 2018 knows that he is capable of making a highlight-reel play at any moment, which makes him extremely exciting and terrifying for opposing defensive coordinators.

Mahomes could be even more dangerous since the Chiefs have retained pretty much all of their key offensive personnel from last year’s Super Bowl winner. Wideouts Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and Mecole Hardman can team again with tight end Travis Kelce to give Mahomes the deadliest collection of pass-catchers in football.

The Chiefs also gave Mahomes another shiny new toy in the backfield when they drafted LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the first round. Edwards-Helaire is not only a talented runner but a skilled receiver out of the backfield, giving Andy Reid even more options to come up with big plays for the Kansas City offense.

The schedule is also conducive for an MVP run out of Mahomes since the Chiefs don’t face a ton of elite defenses in 2020. Aside from the Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots there aren’t a ton of top-flight defensive units that have the capability to slow down all of the Chiefs’ weapons at once.

The odds of Jackson duplicating his historic season are also slim, which should allow the gap to be closed between him and Mahomes. Jackson also benefitted from Mahomes missing two games with an injury.

The oddsmakers clearly believe Mahomes will be healthy and win the MVP again, which is a smart bet to lay. The stage is set for Mahomes to take his game to yet another level, which is very exciting for casual fans and Chiefs’ kingdom to see.
