Washington football: 5 best seasons in Huskies’ history, ranked
By Ethan Lee
1. Washington football wins the national championship in 1991.
1991 was the perfect season for Washington football. The season had it all for the Huskies: a perfect record, a conference title, wins over notable teams, a Rose Bowl championship, and a claim at the national championship.
Washington opened up the year with a 42-7 win over Stanford, getting a nice Pac-10 win early on in the year. Then the No. 4 Huskies hiked over the Lincoln, Nebraska for a game against the No. 9 Nebraska Cornhuskers. Against the Huskers, the Huskies won in a statement-making fashion, winning 36-21.
Washington followed that win up with a huge 56-3 win over Kansas State (for those counting at home, that’s wins over two Big 8 teams early on in the season). The Huskies had no issue with Arizona or Toledo, but they did have a bit of an issue against No. 7 California. However, California fell to Washington and the No. 3 Huskies prevailed, winning 24-17.
As it turned out, that would be Washington’s toughest game left on the schedule (and probably the toughest game Washington played all season). The Huskies crushed their remaining regular-season foes with the last actually challenging foe for Washington came as the Huskies faced the USC Trojans.
Washington finished the regular season 11-0 and then set its sights on the Rose Bowl. In Pasadena, the No. 2 Huskies faced off against No. 4 Michigan Wolverines. But Washington’s team was hardly fazed by the perennial blue blood and the Huskies won 34-14.
A huge Rose Bowl victory, a claim at a national title, several solid wins over high profile teams, and a perfect 12-0 year all contributed to 1991 being arguably the best season in Washington football history.
