1. Better protection

The Browns did a poor job of protecting Mayfield in 2019. That, more than any other single reason, was the biggest contributor to his struggles a season ago. It’s fair to say that the Browns adressed their issues at tackle emphatically this offseason.

Spending a first-round pick on Jedrick Wills gives the team a high-level prospect to develop at left tackle. The former Alabama star may commit some rookie mistakes, but he’ll be a high quality starter in relatively short order. Keeping heat off of Mayfield’s blind side should pay off huge for th Browns.

The addition of Jack Conklin on the right side in free agency could prove to be just as important. He’s just the sort of veteran that can emerge as the emotional leader of the team’s line. He’s a quality pass blocker but his ability to open up holes in the run game is where his impact will really be felt. Both skills will prove beneficial for Mayfield.

If the Browns offensive line goes from a weakness to a strength then it should get Mayfield’s NFL career back on track. It will also get Cleveland back into the mix for a playoff hunt. Don’t sleep on their chances of snagging a Wild Card berth behind Mayfield’s play in 2020.
