Will the Florida football schedule lead to the Gators winning the SEC East?

For the past few years, Florida football has seemingly been held back by their lack of an answer at quarterback. Sure, upgrading to Dan Mullen from Jim McElwain at head coach helped as well but the Gators’ ceiling always seemed defined due to the inconsistently and lack of trust under center. Kyle Trask seems like he might be capable of changing that, however.

Trask took over for Feleipe Franks due to injury in the third game of the season and went 8-2 as the starting quarterback. More importantly, however, he provided a serious spark to the passing game, throwing for 2,941 yards, 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions while rushing for four scores as well.

Now Trask returns with enormous expectations placed upon him by the Florida football faithful. And there are high hopes for the 2020 season. Mullen has clearly both recruited well and coached the Gators well, with the help of defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, to where they can compete. And now it’s a question of whether they can get past rival Georgia to win the SEC East — and maybe if they can win the conference as a whole.

Despite the hype around Trask, however, Florida has questions that must be answered in the 2020 season. Tight end Kyle Pitts might be the best player at his position in college football and there are big-play weapons at wide receiver. That said, the Gators will need Dameon Pierce to step into a larger role to replace departed Lamical Perine.

More pressingly, the Gators defense lost a ton of talent, headlined by Jabari Zuniga, Jonathan Greenard and C.J. Henderson all heading to the NFL. Grantham has earned the benefit of the doubt as a coordinator but he’ll need guys such as Brenton Cox Jr. and Marco Wilson to step up if they want to be one of the stingiest scoring defenses in the country once again.

So where does this leave the program in 2020 and how will they finish? Mullen expects Florida football to go undefeated and Urban Meyer is picking the Gators to make the College Football Playoff, but are we predicting the same thing? Let’s go game-by-game through the 2020 Florida football schedule and predict the outcome of each contest to try and figure it all out.
