Trying to compare the Denver Broncos team speed to the Kansas City Chiefs is a joke
By Mark Powell
The Broncos and Chiefs have similar team speed, per NFL.com, but that simply doesn’t tell the entire story.
The Broncos have made a point this offseason in adding offensive weapons around emerging QB Drew Lock. It’s an admirable effort, especially as they play from behind in a crowded AFC West.
By drafting the likes of Jerry Jeudy, and signing Melvin Gordon to pair with the Philip Lindsay, Denver does have one of the better skill position groups in the AFC, not just their division.
However, suggesting they possess the same amount of speed as the rival Chiefs is sending the wrong message.
Kansas City Chiefs are still the fastest team in the NFL, and it’s not close
To be fair to John Elway, the rest of the NFL is playing catch-up as well.
Now, 40-yard dash times rarely tell the entire story in terms of on-field speed. But nonetheless, Tyreek Hill was clocked at a 4.29, and Mecole Hardman ran a 4.33. Either of those are tough to beat, and Andy Reid is creative and finding a way to get them the ball in space. Throw in Damien Williams’ rather modest 4.45, and Mahomes ability to extend plays with his feet, and the Chiefs’ speed is as deadly as ever.
The Giants ranking No. 1 on said list is further proof that, while speed is important in the modern NFL, that attribute alone is not conducive to winning. Reid’s creativity, as well as Mahomes ball-placement, aid the Chiefs in using that speed to their advantage. In the open field, we’d put our money on Hill or Hardman over just about anyone the Broncos have to offer, despite their impressive offseason additions.
Apologies to Broncos fans, but it’s impossible to outrun a team with a wide receiver literally nicknames ‘Cheetah’ in their starting 11.
