Juventus and Napoli renew their rivalry Wednesday, June 17 in Coppa Italia final at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico. Here’s what you need to know before you watch.

The first trophy of the Italian soccer season is up for grabs Wednesday when Juventus and Napoli square off in the Coppa Italia final in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.

Juventus reached the final after overcoming AC Milan in the semifinals, while Napoli defeated Inter Milan. The semifinal second-leg matches were played after the season was put on pause following the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The teams come into the final a little rusty after the hiatus. In their scoreless draw (Juve advanced on away goals after the series ended 1-1 on aggregate) last Friday against AC Milan, Juve showed flashes of brilliance. The attacking duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Pablo Dybala had a solid 30 minutes, but the team looked disjointed for the remainder of the match.

Ronaldo’s missed penalty was a highlight of failure, but defender Matthijs de Ligt ensured that the backline swept away any AC Milan threats.

Napoli, meanwhile, managed a 1-1 draw (advancing 2-1 on aggregate) on Saturday at home, thanks to striker’s Dries Mertens’ goal (he is now the team’s all-time leading scorer) and goalkeeper David Ospina’s outstanding saves in the waning minutes.

The Coppa Italia final will be played with no fans because of coronavirus restrictions. The game will go directly to penalties should it end in a draw.

Juve and Napoli are longtime rivals, something that stretches back decades and reached a crescendo during the 1980s when the Partenopei became title contenders. The Bianconeri, however, have historically been the best team in Italian history. Although Napoli fell on hard times starting in the mid-’90s, the rivalry again intensified in the 2010s with Napoli’s 2-0 victory against Juventus in the 2012 Coppa Italia final.

Juventus and Napoli have played many famous clashes, both in Serie A and in the league cup. In August 2006, Napoli and Juve played to a 3-3, a game the Partenopei won 8-7 in a penalty-kick shootout. Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and defender Giorgio Chiellini are the only two players from that game still playing for the Turin-based club. In 2018, Napoli defeated Juventus 1-0 on a 90th-minute goal from defender Kalidou Koulibaly, although Juve won the league title nonetheless that spring.

This upcoming meeting also features Juve’s first-year manager Maurizio Sarri and striker Gonzalo Higuain facing their old club. Sarri will be looking to win his first-ever trophy on Italian soil as Juve look to take the treble this season. They are currently first in Serie A and still alive in the Champions League.
