Florida football: 5 most underrated players in Florida Gators history
By John Buhler
Don’t sleep on the numbers Chris Doering posted for Florida football.
Chris Doering may be making a name for himself these days as a football analyst for The SEC Network, but back in the day, he was one of the best wide receivers in Florida football history. Doering redshirted for Spurrier back in 1991. Four years later, he left Gainesville with more receiving touchdowns than anyone in program history with 31 trips to pay dirt.
As a redshirt sophomore, Doering had a lot of fun in the Fun ‘n Gun offense of the head ball coach. He had 43 catches for 553 yards and seven touchdowns. His redshirt junior season was almost as good with 35 catches for 496 yards and seven additional touchdowns. Then in his redshirt senior season of 1995, Doering set the SEC on fire with his brilliant receiving skills.
In what was his final college season, Doering had 70 catches for 1,045 yards and 17 touchdowns. Doering was First-Team All-SEC, a Second-Team All-American and was part of a third-straight SEC Championship team. He left Gainesville with 149 career catches for 2,107 yards and 31 receiving touchdowns. Doering then spent the next 13 seasons in professional football.
In 2002, Doering reunited with Spurrier on the Washington Redskins. His journeyman NFL career ended with 42 catches for 476 yards and three touchdown catches in 40 games, three of which being starts. Though he didn’t win a national championship with the 1996 team, you can’t tell the story of the Fun ‘n Gun offense down in Gainesville under Spurrier without mentioning Doering.
