Tottenham need to make another transfer swoop for Jack Grealish
Jack Grealish isn’t the defensive midfielder that Tottenham require, but he is the attacking midfielder who can make their offense unstoppable.
Tottenham almost completed a successful swoop for Jack Grealish during Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure at the club. This summer needs to be the time that Jose Mourinho makes the move a reality.
According to The Athletic, Grealish has decided it’s time to leave Aston Villa at the conclusion of the current campaign. He’s desperate to keep his boyhood club in England’s top flight, but he now realizes that he needs to move to a bigger club if he wants to fulfill his vast potential.
Numerous European powers will immediately place Grealish on their list of summer transfer targets. His ability to both score goals and create opportunities for others make him an ideal fit for any side that likes to play attractive, attacking football. His seven goals and six assists on the season are huge reasons why Aston Villa has any chance to avoid relegation.
Tottenham’s decision to sell Christian Eriksen in January leaves them without a No. 10 who has a proven ability to control Premier League matches. Dele Alli does well in that spot but he focuses more of his attention on scoring than creating for others. Relatively new signings Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele have the potential to create in the middle of the pitch, but injury issues have plagued both men this season. In short, Spurs would do well to acquire a top-flight option this summer.

Grealish may be the best player they have a realistic chance to acquire. His previous interest in Spurs has been well-documented. It’s believed he would prefer to stay in the Premier League if at all possible. Tottenham may be the best club willing to hand over the keys of their attack to him. Villa aren’t going to sell him to Spurs on the cheap, but this is a situation where Daniel Levy shouldn’t allow money to stand in the way of improving his squad.
Admittedly, Spurs also need to purchase a quality defensive midfielder this summer. That’s imperative for Mourinho if he wants to solidify his questionable defense. Some might argue that any big money Tottenham should spend this summer must be devoted to a player who can reliably shield the back four.
There’s merit to that argument, but it ignores the star quality that Grealish exudes on the pitch. His statistical output has a chance to explode when he’s surrounded by more quality. Villa struggle to retain possession in a significant number of their matches. That prevents Grealish from using his best skills.
The only real question Tottenham officials need to answer about Grealish is whether or not they’re willing to spend the kind of money required to acquire him. He fits the club’s “To Dare is To Do” mantra to perfection. Spurs should do everything in their power to bring him to North London this summer.
