The Michigan State basketball recruiting class needs this five-star recruit.

Tom Izzo is one of the best college basketball coaches of all time and one of the reasons he’s so good is his ability to win at such a high level without needing a top-five recruiting class every year.

Izzo and Michigan State basketball has recruited fine over the years, but the Spartans haven’t had a top-15 class since 2016 when Miles Bridges, Joshua Langford, Cassius Winston and Nick Ward came together to five Michigan State basketball recruiting the nation’s No. 3 class in the nation.

Michigan State basketball recruiting classes ranked No. 49 in 2017, No. 17 in 2018, No. 26 in 2019 and No. 46 for the 2020 class.

The 2021 class ranks No. 32 in the nation, according to the 247Sports Team Rankings based on the lone commit so far from four-star shooting guard Pierre Brooks from Detroit.

While Michigan State basketball recruiting efforts may be looking slightly ahead to 2022 with No. 1 overall recruit Emoni Bates a likely future Spartan if he doesn’t go pro. But the 2021 class is just beginning to come into focus and Spartans fans should be keeping their eyes on this five-star recruit who could give Izzo his best class since 2016.

Max Christie would give Michigan State basketball recruiting a five-star stud.

The No. 1 shooting guard in the nation and the No. 12 overall recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Max Christie would be the crown jewel of the Michigan State basketball recruiting class. The Rolling Meadows, Illinois native is a 6-foot-6, 165-pound prospect who has great height for his position that allows him to get his shot off and the speed and athleticism to beat bigger defenders off the dribble.

Like most basketball recruits at this stage of their development, Christie needs to get stronger and add weight to be an instant impact performer in college and get closer toward realizing an NBA future. He’s already got the potential to be a first round pick and a potential lottery pick if he’s able to put on muscle and continue to improve his all-around game.

If he’s able to spend a year or two in East Lansing studying under Izzo while wearing a Michigan State basketball uniform in the process, Spartans fans will love seeing Christie on campus and writing his legacy among other Spartans greats.

Of course, there’s a long way to go before now and then, especially with programs like Duke in hot pursuit of the talented shooting guard. It’s early in the recruiting process but Michigan State adding Griffin to their 2021 recruiting class could go a long way toward the Spartans winning the Big Ten and possibly making another Final Four appearance.
