Patrick Mahomes has all of mental tools to be the best

Very few quarterbacks in the history of the league, let alone now, have ever possessed both the physical talent and the mental ability to dominate the game the way that Mahomes has during his first two seasons as a starter. This manifests itself in a few important ways.

First, Mahomes knows when to run and when to throw. Many quarterbacks with Mahomes’ running ability are apt to tuck the ball and run more quickly than many, more traditional pocket passers. But, Mahomes is the best combination of both – he’s a skilled runner who uses his feet to bait opposing defenders before ultimately (typically) making the right pass at the last possible moment.

The football IQ it takes to balance the run versus pass nature of the position, when both are an option, is incredible.

Second, Mahomes knows how to motivate the players on his team, and does so regularly. We’ve heard all of the sound bites and seen all of the game breakdowns – if the team is in a tight spot, the young quarterback is right there, knowing exactly which buttons to push with which players at what time to get the job done – and it works far more often than it does not. Knowing your teammates as well as PMII obviously does is next level processing.

Third, Mahomes knows how to throw receivers open. We alluded to this when discussing his creativity – but understanding where defenders are going to be is about understanding and processing defensive movements during the play. No one in the NFL is better than Mahomes at this skill.
