5 reasons Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in football
Patrick Mahomes has the best arm in the NFL
Despite what FOX Sports’ Colin Cowherd thinks, Mahomes has the most skilled arm in the entire league. There is simply no way that this is not obvious, to everyone, at this point. There are three components to consider when ranking “best arm”: accuracy, power, and touch.
Mahomes is the most accurate quarterback in the NFL. Pro Football Focus sums this reality up when analyzing the Chiefs quarterback in “tight” throwing situations:
"Mahomes, the league’s MVP, only attempted 95 passes into tight coverage last year (19th-most among quarterbacks), but he was lights out when he decided to air it out and let his guy make a play. Mahomes led the league with a 56.7% accuracy rate and a 41.8% “accuracy plus” rate on throws into tight coverage — both of these marks are now the best ever recorded by a quarterback over a single season."
You read that correctly – the best marks ever recorded by a quarterback over a single season.
Second is power. Mahomes has a strong enough throwing arm to heave the ball 50+ yards down the field without planting his back foot, or sometimes any feet at all, on the ground before release. There are other quarterbacks that could throw the ball out of Arrowhead Stadium while standing on the field, but there are not other that can launch the ball as far as the Texas Tech product with no plant-foot.
Finally, is touch. There is no spot on the field that Mahomes cannot land the football. Mahomes league low interception rate in 2019 (1.0%) is proof of this, but there is little data to really demonstrate how absurdly talented the Chiefs young MVP is when it comes to putting the ball in a window.
So yes, there are quarterbacks with good arms in the NFL – but then there is Mahomes, who is the very best.
