No. 2: Underrated college football quarterbacks – Timmy Chang, Hawaii

Chang’s time at Hawaii was a truly intriguing one. He had, by far, one of the most interesting college football careers of all time, and he helped Hawaii succeed at a high level while throwing for a ton of yards, touchdowns, and, unfortunately, interceptions.

In just 10 games as a freshman, Chang threw for 3,041 yards and 19 touchdowns, completing a meager 52.2 percent of his passes. Hawaii won a meager amount of games in the process, going 3-9 in 2000. And unfortunately for Chang, he missed out on most of the 2001 season, playing in just three games before being sidelined due to an injured wrist.

But once he got back on the field, Chang improved, helping Hawaii have a great season. The Rainbow Warriors found a way to win nine games in 2001, and in 2002, they took a step forward, winning 10 games. Chang threw for 4,474 yards and 25 touchdowns, but he lobbed 22 passes into the arms of his opponents as well.

In 2003, the Rainbow Warriors sustained their success, winning nine games again. Chang threw for 4,199 yards and 29 touchdowns during his redshirt junior season. But it was during his redshirt senior year when Chang significantly cut back on throwing to the wrong team.

During the 2004 season, Hawaii marched its way to an 8-5 record. Chang threw for 4,258 yards, a career-high 38 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

Now, it is fair to lob some criticism towards Chang. The fact that nobody in FBS history has thrown for more interceptions than Chang should earn him some criticism. This is by far the biggest knock on his college career. Chang was a remarkable quarterback for Hawaii, but for as much good as he did his own team, he often found ways to unintentionally help his opponents as well, especially early on in his career.

Still, it can’t be understated of what he accomplished and who he accomplished it for. Despite the fact that he was error-prone as a quarterback, Timmy Chang was proficient and productive. His play helped Hawaii become a consistent winner and he’s thrown for the second-most yards in a career and the 11th most touchdowns in a career in FBS history.

Chang’s college career is often overlooked because of the interceptions, but that shouldn’t detract from his accomplishments as much as it does.
