The New England Patriots signed Cam Newron to a one-year deal.

For months, the New England Patriots made us believe that the Jarrett Stidham was going to be the starting quarterback that succeeds Tom Brady. The Pats had TB12 under center for the better part of two decades, winning six Super Bowls in the process. Then, buried on a Sunday night, the Patriots signed former MVP Cam Newton to a one-year deal.

Twitter took very little time to lose their minds over the deal. Maybe it’s the fact that there isn’t a lot of NFL news nowadays, or people still waiting for COVID-19 lockdown to lift, or the fact that this was the New England Patriots of all teams. The deal had social media exploding in mere seconds.

Although most people were happy for Cam Newton and the Patriots, there were a lot of people thinking about Stidham. The man thought he was going to be a starting QB in the NFL, but now he has to wait at least one more year.

Okay, maybe most people were making a joke of Stidham’s situation. While the world was thinking about Patriots head coach Bill Belichick playing chess with our emotions yet again, many were very excited to think about Newton with an offensive mind like Josh McDaniels. This is going to be fun to watch.

Newton is still just 31 years old. He spent most of last season on the sidelines, which helps all the nagging injuries he’s been dealing with over the last few years. His back and lower-body injuries slowed him down, but as we saw this offseason, he tends to put all those who doubt him in the rearview mirror.
