10 NFL players who are regression candidates in 2020
Desir’s third and final season with the Colts saw him reach new heights as he finished the year with 11 passes defensed and three interceptions. He parlayed that production into a one-year deal with a Jets team that has long since had issues at the cornerback position.
In moving to the Jets, Desir is going from one talented defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus, to another in veteran coach Gregg Williams. It is the supporting cast, however, that is the problem in New York.
The Jets defense had an impressive 2019 but the talent they have on that side of the ball remains questionable. They are strong at linebacker but Desir cannot expect to have the help of a potent pass rush. Edge rusher is a problem area that the Jets have continually failed to address while defensive tackle Quinnen Williams was unable to live up to his status as the third overall pick in 2019.
Desir may not even be able to count on having the assistance of an All-Pro safety if Jamal Adams gets his wish and is traded elsewhere. If the Jets’ struggles on offense continue, Desir can expect to be on the field a lot in 2020.
He will be hoping to earn a more significant contract next offseason but, because of the confluence of factors facing him in New York, a more challenging and less productive year is the more probable outcome.
