Jack Grealish has the talent to help a club like Manchester United, but the presence of Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford makes him a poor fit for the club.

Manchester United are smart to consider adding a young, talented Englishman like Jack Grealish. Most summers, he’d represent an excellent purchase for the Premier Leauge giants. However, the recent arrival of Bruno Fernandes at the club should steer United away from paying big money for the Aston Villa star.

Grealish’s old manager, Tim Sherwood, seems to believe that his former pupil already has completed a deal that will take him to United this summer. It’s unlikely that Aston Villa have made any firm decisions on Grealish’s future before their immediate Premier League future is decided. Villa are locked in the midst of a challenging battle to avoid relegation at the moment. If they stay in the Premier League, they’ll desperately want to keep hold of Grealish to help boost their chances of improving their league standing in years to come.

With that being said, it’s very possible that Villa will receive a financial offer they can’t afford to refuse. United have been adamant that they won’t spend more than £50 million on any individual player this summer. Time will tell if United really intends to toe that budgetary line.

Signing Grealish would almost certainly cause them to exceed that threshold. Villa want to start the bidding for their stylish No. 10 at £75 million. It’s unclear whether or not any European power will be willing to meet that asking price, but it’s safe to assume there will be strong interest.

More from Premier League

The transaction doesn’t make sense for United at any significant price. Grealish is at his best when he’s pulling the strings for his club’s attack as their unquestioned No. 10. That spot isn’t available to him at Manchester United. Bruno Fernandes has seized it for his own during recent weeks at Old Trafford. He’s arguably been the best January purchase in all of Europe. United want to build their attack around him rather than challenge him by adding a player like Grealish this summer.

The biggest reason why United might still push ahead with a deal to sign Grealish is due to their desire to keep him away from their Premier League rivals. If he doesn’t move to United this summer it’s very possible he will play against them with another top-six club next year. Grealish would be an expensive purchase just to keep him away from another club, but it’s not an idea without merit from United’s perspective.

In the end, look for United to stay in the frame for Grealish until his future is decided. He’s not going to make a big impact on their squad next season though. That’s why Ed Woodward and his transfer team should look to spend funds elsewhere. Grealish simply isn’t good enough to provide Manchester United with an upgrade over Bruno Fernandes.
