The Kansas City Chiefs signed Patrick Mahomes to a 10-year contract extension worth $503 million.

Before Monday afternoon, no NFL player had ever signed a contract worth $250 million. Patrick Mahomes more than doubled that number.

The Kansas City Chiefs extended their superstar quarterback on a 10-year deal, keeping him through the 2031 season. Mahomes can earn up to $503 million, with $140 million injury guaranteed and $477 million guaranteed with mechanisms in place. As explained by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Chiefs must guaranteed Mahomes’ deal a year ahead of time.

So why did the Chiefs pay Mahomes such an ungodly sum? Well, if you’ve never seen him play, here’s a five-minute video to help you understand.

Mahomes was drafted with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 Draft by Kansas City, who moved up 17 spots to land him. After sitting behind Alex Smith as a rookie, Mahomes stormed onto the scene in 2018, throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns en route to the NFL MVP award.

In 2019, Mahomes was once again brilliant, this time leading the Chiefs to the Super Bowl. He was also named Super Bowl LIV MVP.

Mahomes will be signed through his age-36 season, putting him in a Chiefs uniform through most of, if not his entire career. Kansas City should be staying in the title conversation throughout that period, considering Mahomes is a generational talent at the game’s most important position.

Kansas City emptied the piggy bank on Monday, but we’re guessing the Chiefs don’t have any buyer’s remorse.
