Don’t forget, Patrick Mahomes was a total beast at Texas Tech, too

Patrick Mahomes showed us all he was great while with Texas Tech football.

Patrick Mahomes just made more money than most humans would know what to do with.

Entering his fourth year with the Kansas City Chiefs, Mahomes inked a 10-year extension with the reigning Super Bowl champions, as he becomes the highest paid player in NFL history. Though 10-year contracts to quarterbacks in the NFL almost never work out, here’s to Mahomes bucking the trend.

While could have never imagined this is what he’d become after only three years in the NFL, Mahomes did show glimpses of his otherworldly talent while playing for Kliff Kingsbury as a member of Texas Tech football. Though the Texas Tech Red Raiders were all offense and absolutely no defense, here’s some of his best college highlights if you’re into that sort of thing.

Patrick Mahomes had an absolute howitzer for an arm at Texas Tech, too.

In that minute of highlights, three things stand out with Mahomes. One, he was incredibly raw as a quarterbacking prospect, but man, did me make so many big-time throws off-balance and over 50 yards through the air. His footwork might have been sloppy as all get-up, but you can see from the tape why Andy Reid, Brett Veach and the Chiefs took a gamble on him at No. 10 overall.

Two, Mahomes was never afraid to make plays with his legs. Though the Big 12 is a pillow fight conference defensively, Mahomes’ underrated shiftiness is a big part of what makes him such a dynamic player at the professional level. If he doesn’t display those improvisational skills as a runner in the AFC title bout, maybe it’s the Tennessee Titans taking their talents to South Beach?

And three, even though he was underrecruited coming out of high school, as he was thought of more as a baseball prospect like his big league pitcher father Pat Mahomes, it’s abundantly clear Mahomes was simply more talented than everybody he played with and went up against in Big 12 play. If he played for Texas A&M, maybe the SEC’s clout gets him to the No. 1 overall pick?

Though this all happened four years ago, Mahomes’ Texas Tech highlights will always be timeless.
