The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is considered by many to be the best player in the NFL, but is he the best player in all of sports?

On Monday afternoon, Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes signed a massive 10-year extension worth around $450 million, making him the highest-paid athlete in sports.

While the 2018 NFL MVP is considered by many to be the best player in football, there is now a debate swirling around on whether Mahomes is the best individual player in sports.

This topic was debated on ESPN’s First Take Wednesday morning where co-host Max Kellerman made the case for Mahomes being the best player in sports.

In Kellerman’s argument, he says Mahomes deserves the honor because he’s the most unanimous choice to build a winning franchise around, and no other player would be able to build a championship-winning team like Mahomes.

"If I asked you, or anyone who follows football, ‘Who do you want to start a franchise?,’ every single person is going to take Patrick Mahomes."

Kellerman went on to compare Mahomes with LeBron James, who is generally considered the best player in the NBA, and said LeBron would not be every basketball fan or experts’ pick to build a winning franchise, like it would be for Mahomes.

While Mahomes may not be the best athlete in sports, there is certainly a good argument for him being the best player.

Kellerman does make a good point in the NBA having parity, along with a large number of star players, that it hasn’t seen in awhile. There are certainly other players than LeBron, many of whom younger, who could reasonably be chosen over him to build a franchise, such as reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard.

Still, with how valuable Mahomes is to his team, and at such a young age, it’s something not paralleled anywhere.
