Jim Harbaugh has some polarizing thoughts about the coronavirus
Once again, Jim Harbaugh has made some perplexing comments.
Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh thinks college football needs to co-exist with the coronavirus.
“COVID is part of our society,” Harbaugh told reporters on Wednesday. “It wasn’t caused by football or caused by sports. There’s no expert view right now that I’m aware of that sports is going to make that worse. It’s part of our society, we’re going to have to deal with it.”
Being resigned to the fact that humans just need to acknowledge or accept that the coronavirus is a part of society and we just need to live with is a defeatist attitude. This is something I wouldn’t expect to hear from Harbaugh who is obsessed with winning. It’s why he’s up at night because of his inability to beat Ohio State or compete for a Big Ten championship yet under his watch as Michigan’s coach.
It may be an attitude or viewpoint shared by others across the political spectrum, but this screams of pulling your starters when you’re down 28 in the fourth quarter.
The parts of Harbaugh’s comments that actually make sense are in the middle when he says the coronavirus pandemic wasn’t caused by football or sports. No one is suggesting the pandemic started because of the NFL or NBA. No one is suggesting the pandemic is disproportionately affecting the U.S.A. because of sports.
But what’s really going to get Harbaugh’s critics fuming is when he says there’s no expert view right now that sports is going to make it worse.
Well, large groups of people are banned in several states, social distancing is still required, so unless football players will line up at least six feet from each other, it may complicate things just a bit.
Harbaugh didn’t mention whether he wants or thinks fans will be in the stands this year, but adding spectators to the sport will most definitely make things worse.
Harbaugh’s comments look like two truths and a lie and while the Michigan football coach has made some strong comments in the past as it relates to college football and NFL Draft reform, this one misses the mark.
