FOX listing Dabo Swinney as the No. 2 head coach in college football is a joke

Had you asked the college football world five years ago who the best head coach was, there’s little doubt everyone and their mother would go with Nick Saban. However, things have changed and Alabama’s dominance isn’t what it used to be.

Someone needs to explain that to the kind folks over at FOX College Football, who totally disrespected Clemson head man Dabo Swinney with their latest rankings of coaches. Saban over Swinney? On which planet does this make sense?

Clemson has won two of the past five College Football Playoff National Championships

Few can argue with the Top 5 as a whole, it’s just the order that is nothing short of puzzling. Yes, Saban will go down as one of the best coaches in college football history. But, he’s coming off a campaign where his team didn’t even make the College Football Playoff.

As for Swinney, he and Trevor Lawrence powered the team to another unreal year, but unfortunately fell to powerhouse LSU in the national title game. Still, that doesn’t take away from the remarkable stretch Clemson is in the middle of.

The Tigers have made it to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in four of the past five seasons. This includes winning it all in 2016 and 2018. Few have forgotten about that incredible run in ’18, where Lawrence was just a true freshman, but that didn’t stop him from taking down ‘Bama for the natty.

You can make the argument Saban has also been to four of the last five national title games, but not even making the playoff last campaign surely stands out. Both teams figure to be in contention once again in 2020, but Clemson is already entering play as the favorite to win it all.

If Swinney and his guys can raise the title trophy high into the sky once again, there will be no debate as to who the king of the college football world is.
