New York Mets manager Luis Rojas gives promising update on Dellin Betances

Mets manager Luis Rojas provided some hopeful news regarding reliever Dellin Betances.

Dellin Betances signed with the New York Mets this offseason and a rough finish to his tenure with the New York Yankees. The reliever tore his achilles tendon during his only outing in 2019 and was let go after making four All-Star Games with the Yankees.

The Mets gave him a fresh start and Betances began the year by struggling to get back to his normal velocity. Then came the MLB shutdown, which ended up being a good thing for some players.

Betances is included in that group and Mets manager Luis Rojas shared how much better the reliever is doing here in July.

This is a great update for someone who was one of the more dominant relievers in the game through the latter half of the 2010s. Betances holds a career ERA of 2.36 and an impressive 14.6 K/9.

Injuries began his downfall and 2019 was a disaster that ended with a serious setback after logging .2 innings in one September appearance.

Extra time off ended up being just what Betances needed and the Mets can still ease him back into action once the season begins. 2020 can be all about getting back to full health and not pushing himself too hard. The season being only 60 games should help prevent that as well.

Betances is a New York City native who has only played professionally in his hometown. He is now making the short move to Queens and it will be easy for fans all over the city to cheer him on as he looks to get back to his old ways. The reliever never had fewer than 100 strikeouts in any season from 2014-2018 and he is looking to show the Yankees it was a mistake to not lock him down on a long-term deal.
