Shea Patterson’s Chiefs career over before it even began
By Scott Rogust
Shea Patterson’s stint with the Chiefs lasted all of two months
Upon entering the pre-NFL Draft process, Michigan signal caller Shea Patterson was always considered a long shot to stick on a professional team. Despite signing with the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs in early May, Patterson’s time has reached its end.
On Friday, the Chiefs waived Patterson after the team signed veteran Matt Moore to a one-year contract.
Upon signing with Kansas City, Patterson ranked behind veteran Chad Henne and St. Louis BattleHawks star Jordan Ta’amu on the depth chart. Once Moore was brought back by the Chiefs, it became fully clear that Patterson would be the one on the chopping block.
Patterson was always a long shot to make the Chiefs 53-man roster
Patterson was the Michigan Wolverines’ starting signal caller for two seasons at Ann Arbor. Through 26 games, Patterson accumulated 5,661 passing yards, 45 touchdowns and 15 interceptions while completing 60.1% of his throws.
This past February, Patterson was one of 337 prospects invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. While he performed admirably, Patterson didn’t boast the ideal size that NFL teams want in their quarterbacks.
Once the NFL Draft concluded, Patterson was the last player from the 2020 combine to land with an NFL team. And now, he’s subject to the waiver wire. If he’s not claimed by another team, he’ll hit the open market.
You can’t rule out Patterson landing on a team at some point this year. Given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the former Wolverine could land on a team as depth just in case a quarterback were to hit the injured list.
