Which Washington players won’t be retained by head coach Ron Rivera?

When thinking about teams who aren’t expected to contend in 2020, the Washington Redskins are the first to come to mind. They have a stacked front seven, thanks to them drafting Ohio State stud pass rusher Chase Young with the second overall pick. But other than that, this is a team that’s filled with question marks.

Ron Rivera wasn’t only given the head coach position by owner Dan Snyder, but was also granted power over the roster. Considering Washington has a ways to go to emerge from the cellar in the NFC East, the changes are only going to continue in the next year. With this in mind, these three players will be moving on elsewhere after the 2020 season.

If there’s one problem that head coach Ron Rivera doesn’t have, it’s at pass rusher. The team has the likes of Chase Young, Montez Sweat, Da’Ron Payne, and Jonathan Allen lined up on their front seven. That means there aren’t many spots available for the foreseeable future. Yet, there are two players set to hit the open market in 2021: Ryan Kerrigan and Ryan Anderson.

Let’s be real, Kerrigan isn’t going anywhere. He wants to remain in Washington for the rest of his career, which will make it easier for the team to sign him to an extension. That means Anderson is on the outside looking in.

Anderson was selected in the second round out of Alabama, but has never made an immediate impact on the team until this past season. Through 16 games (four starts), Anderson recorded 44 total tackles, four sacks and five forced fumbles (two recoveries).

The thing is, Washington is switching their entire defensive scheme from a 3-4 to a 4-3 under new defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio. That means Anderson is listed as a backup this upcoming season. With the likelihood of Kerrigan being the priority signing before the start of the new league year, expect Anderson to land on another NFL team come 2021.
