Washington Redskin’s name change is ‘imminent’

A new name for the Washington NFL franchise is arriving in the very near future.

The Washington Redskins name has been subject to criticism over the years but was repeatedly shot down by team owner Dan Snyder. As it turns out, money was the only way to get through to Snyder, as FedEx CEO and minority stakes team owner Fred Smith threatened to pull funding from the team unless the nickname was changed. Now, we have a timeline of when the name will be revealed.

According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, the Washington DC-based team will announce the new team name within the next few days. Additionally, the 31 other teams in the league have been told to remove the old logo off their respective platforms

Which name will Washington choose?

There has been tons of speculation regarding what nickname Snyder would choose for his team. Reports earlier this week indicated that Washington will no longer have Native American imagery associated with the team, given the controversial nature of their previous logo. In fact, 15 Native American leaders sent a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell imploring them to abandon the name and logo immediately.

So what names are in the running? The “Warriors” received some steam this past week, given that it was in Snyder’s back pocket for quite some time in case he was forced to change the name.

Shortly afterward, “the Redtails” picked up a ton of public support, given the name honors the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American pilots who fought in World War II.

Most recently, there was a push on social media to rename the team the “Red Wolves.” Among the current Washington players vouching for this nickname include quarterback Dwayne Haskins and defensive lineman, Jonathan Allen.

Whatever the new name may be, football fans and society in general will be happy to see that the controversial previous nickname will be no more by the end of next week.
