player. Pick Analysis. Big 12. Oklahoma Sooners. 4. 815. Scouting Report.

The first team to win a national championship in the 21st century was the 2000 Oklahoma Sooners. Bob Stoops was fresh into his legendary stint as the Sooners head coach. While his teams played in two more national titles and made the College Football Playoff in 2015, Oklahoma has continued to disappoint us on major championship stages outside of the Big 12 for years now.

The good news is Stoops’ successor Lincoln Riley might be the best offensive mind in college football. The former Mike Leach Air Raid disciple at Texas Tech has brought his offense to Norman and it could not have gone over any better. In his first three years as head coach, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray won the Heisman Trophy, while Jalen Hurts finished as runner-up for it last year.

Oklahoma has made the College Football Playoff four times in the last five years. They have won the last five Big 12 Championships, but have yet to secure a playoff victory in four chances. So no, the Sooners won’t get the benefit of the doubt as the last team in anymore, as they’ll have to earn their spot convincingly. Fortunately, they’ve become a lock for the Big 12 title bout annually.

By essentially playing a play-in game for the playoff every year, the Sooners will remain in the mix to contend for, and maybe even win a national title. The big challenge his is how do the Sooners build a team that dominates in the Big 12 but can also hang with the SEC blue-bloods, Clemson, Ohio State and quite possibly very soon Oregon. It won’t be easy, but Oklahoma can win it all soon.
