Baker Mayfield is happy about Myles Garrett’s reported new deal.

The Cleveland Browns underwent a painful rebuilding phase from 2016-17 that landed the team two No. 1 overall picks after a 1-31 stretch of football.

Myles Garrett was the No. 1 overall pick in 2017 and Baker Mayfield followed in 2018. Plenty of other pieces were added around the two, but the hope when drafting them was they would both sign second deals in Cleveland and be around for at least a decade.

Garrett is reportedly working toward his own major extension, and his fellow No. 1 pick shared his excitement.

Baker Mayfield is up next

The Browns actually retaining a first-round pick is huge news in Cleveland. Garrett being a bust or leaving after one contract would have been a disaster, but it appears he is locked up on a deserved new deal.

Next up is Mayfield. He was drafted to be the franchise quarterback and he will begin seeking an extension following the 2020 season. That is, if he can prevent showing any more regression like he did last season. However, he did not get much help from unprepared head coach Freddie Kitchens.

The Browns were sitting on a ton of cap space and that was there for the purpose of retaining both Garrett and Mayfield. The Browns also have the ability to move on from the big contracts of Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. if necessary by the time Mayfield needs a new deal.

There are always questions surrounding the future of the Browns, and fans are finally getting some good news with the Garrett extension. One key piece of the franchise is here to stay.

The same can be true for Mayfield, and the Browns will surely pay up if he proves he is worthy of an extension. All eyes will be on the young quarterback in 2020 as he looks to get his own deal worth well over $100 million.
