It is the celebratory end of an era in New York and Mets fans are ready to party.

After years of misery for Mets fans, a change in ownership may improve fortunes for a team that has failed to accomplish much over the last two decades.

The Wilpon Family, owners of the New York Mets, have decided to part ways with the franchise and have multiple suitors in place that will bring much-needed buzz to the Big Apple.

The frontrunner is hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen, whose $2.6 billion deal was turned away in January but is the favorite once again. Only at $600,000 less, showing how poor of owners the Wilpons really are.

Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez bring an interesting dynamic and star power, along with 76ers and Devils owner Josh Harris in the mix.

Steve Cohen has the money to make the Mets relevant again.

What this boils down to is multiple different types of owners. On one hand, is the man with the money who signs the checks in Steve Cohen. On the other is Alex Rodriguez with unparalleled knowledge of the game. Harris boasts a winning pedigree to his name.

When it comes to the Wilpons, they are none of those things. Despite being in one of the country’s biggest markets, the Mets failed to attract many prominent players or to spend the money necessary to acquire them.

Fans have routinely criticized the Wilpons for their inability to fund the team, which would only continue if a deal does not get done this year. Cohen has the money New York desperately needs. Rodriguez provides the cash and dedication to the game that few owners possess. Some fear A-Rod could become overinvolved, but that is a worthwhile risk for the excitement he would inspire.

Mets fans have suffered for too long at the hands of an owner who simply did not care about the team. A change in leadership may bring the success they have been robbed of for so many years.
