5 teams that are happy the Cowboys didn’t sign Dak Prescott
3. Indianapolis Colts
The Colts signed Philip Rivers to a one-year, $25 million deal this offseason, and he and head coach Frank Reich have each said the right things about continuing the relationship beyond that.
There is some evidence, broken down by advanced data and game situations, that Rivers was not as bad as it seemed for the 5-11 Chargers last year. But his arm strength, never elite to begin with, is clearly not what it was and he’ll turn 39 before the 2020 season ends (Dec. 8). If things go badly in Indianapolis this year, Rivers could be looking for a new team next March. Or if there are no solid offers out there, he could be convinced to retire.
The Colts theoretically drafted their quarterback of the future in Jacob Eason this year, and in some parallel universe Jacoby Brissett might stick around in 2021. If there’s a move out there to be made for a quarterback in 2021, none of their current closest options would keep Indianapolis out of the conversation.
The Colts have managed their cap sheet as well as anyone, with general manager Chris Ballard authoring a calculated rebuild/reload without going all-in for multiple big free agents. As of right now, they have a league-high $113.1 million in cap space for 2021 (according to Over The Cap). After thinking Andrew Luck would be their guy for a decade-plus, the Colts could make Prescott their guy in the same way next March.
